The Reality of Violence
Violence is a rising issue in today’s society. It can come in the form of domestic violence, rape, child abuse, or war. Throughout the years, it has gained much media coverage through both the news and social media, but only for a short period of time before something more “interesting” comes along. This is a huge problem because people are becoming so numb to the idea of violence since it is so common and overlooked nowadays. When we become desensitized to violence, we begin to decrease our value of human life without realizing it.
I do not have any personal experience with violence, but I have seen plenty of it on the television and in the news recently. I have read about so many high school and middle school suicides recently and had thoughts about how these events could have been prevented and what drove these bullies to act this way. Along with violence often comes death, which is a huge consequence when we become numb. Bullies today don’t realize that their actions can affect people in horrifying ways; although their actions could be prevented if earlier precautions were taken to ensure they knew how valuable life is.
Many experts say that one main cause for desensitization is video games. Games like “Call of Duty” specifically engage kids in virtual killing and that is numbing them to the reality of violence. These same experts believe that kids should not be allowed to play these violent games in hopes of protecting their emotions and keeping them innocent. Other experts say that it is violent and graphic television which numbs kids. By not letting kids watch these shows, the idea of both violence and the desensitization of it may decrease.
